My teaser:

“The disease, they taught me, grew in the space between men and women, boys and girls; it was passed between them in looks and smiles and touches, and would take root inside of them like mold that rots a tree from the inside out. Then I found out that Hunter was an Unnatural, a thing I’ve always been taught to revile.” ~ pg.90, Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

My teaser:

“And then she rushed at me and threw her arms around my neck, the flame in her hand snuffing out just before she touched me, her skin hot where she held it. We stood like that in the darkness for awhile, me and this teenaged old woman, this rather beautiful girl who  had loved my grandfather when he was the age I am now.” (page 173 of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children).

My Teasers:

This time, I heard no footsteps, but I could feel that she had fled.

“The ghost girl?” asked Himself quite calmly as I lay back down, and I marveled that such a young girl did not cry.  (pg. 55, The House of Dead Maids by Clare Dunkle.)

Book Blogger Hop 7.29.11

It’s been awhile since I stopped by the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Crazy-For-Books.

This week’s prompt:

“Highlight one book you have received this week (for review, from the library, purchased at the store, etc.) that you can’t wait to dig into!”

I just checked out The House of Dead Maids by Clare B. Dunkle from my library. I loved The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy by this author and sought out more of her work.

This novel is a prequel to Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, narrated by Tabby Aykroyd, nursemaid to young Heathcliff. I can’t wait to discover what Dunkle has added to the classic tale.

It’s described as “YA fantasy horror.” I don’t read much horror. I hope I can handle it!

My teaser:

“I was beginning to understand why Mother and Father and everyone else was so careful not to allow young men and women next to each other. Beginning to understand how quickly feelings of excitement or longing could get the better of me.” ~ (Wrapped by Jennifer Bradbury)

Follow Friday and Book Blogger Hop 5.27.11

Follow Friday is a weekly hop hosted at Parajunkee’s View. Link up to find new reads and bookish blogs.

This week’s question: How many books do you read a week? In what format do you read them or listen to them?

My answer: I read about one book a week. In the winter I read more; in the summer I read less. I read traditional print editions. I just love physical books…the covers, the smell of the paper, the way they look on my shelves.

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted at Crazy-for-Books.

This week’s question: What book-to-movie adaptation have you most liked? Which have you disliked?

My answer:

My favorite book-to-movie adaptation is The Princess Bride. Yes, there are some differences between the book and screenplay, but both are absolutely wonderful.

I’m not sure I can pick my least favorite adaptation. Recently, I was a little disappointed with the Percy Jackson movie. I missed all of the book scenes with Ares.

This week’s question:

What is the most emotional scene in a book that you have read lately?

I recently finished Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. This novel is filled with emotional scenes! There is one death of a child that had me in tears. I can’t write more without including a spoiler alert.

Top Ten Tuesdays 5.3.11

Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s list:

The Top Ten Books I’m So Happy Were Recommended to Me

  1. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. My mom gave me her lovely hardcover edition many years ago. She is largely responsible for sparking my love for reading.
  2. The Idiot by Fydor Dostoyevsky. My Russian best friend Julia recommended this novel. The characterization in this novel is amazing.
  3. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book was also recommended to me by Julia. In my opinion, this novel is a mix of genres: fable, self-help and fiction. It resonated with me at the time I read it.
  4. All of Juliet Marillier’s books. Thanks Krista! I love them.
  5. Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer. My library coworkers introduced me to this awesome series.
  6. Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. My coworker Sam recommended this book. I think I started falling in love with steampunk while reading it.
  7. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. A library patron recommended this book to me when she returned it. This is an amazing memoir about the power of communication. I read this book when my father was sick with a terminal illness which made it more bittersweet.
  8. The Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. This novel is one my officemate’s favorites. What dark but beautiful prose.
  9. Wolf Hunt by Gillian Bradshaw. This novel was also recommended by my officemate Beverly.   I love Gillian Bradshaw’s historical fiction. She chooses time periods that haven’t been overexposed instead of setting her novels in the “trendy” eras.
  10. Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende. Again, this was recommended by Beverly. Allende’s writing is so captivating that she deserves not only to be read, but to be studied.

My teaser:

“Mercy grabbed her satchel and threw off her cloak to make her movements easier–never mind the cold between the cars; she could stand it. She checked her guns, and the two women walked into the aisle, narrowly dodging the second wave of uniformed men brandishing weapons.” (pg. 238, Dreadnought by Cherie Priest).

Dreadnought is the second novel in Cherie Priest’s steampunk Clockwork Century series.
